Burnsville Police Respond to Mental Health Crisis and Standoff

BURNSVILLE, MINNESOTA – An active police situation that began as a mental health crisis ended in tragedy Thursday evening in Burnsville, after a man was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Around 6 p.m., officers from the Burnsville Police Department responded to a call in the 200 block of Carriage Lane involving a male in crisis. The situation escalated into a standoff with law enforcement, prompting a large emergency response and mutual aid from several neighboring agencies. The scene resulted in the closure of Southcross Drive in both directions between the intersections of Carriage Lane and Portland Avenue for several hours as emergency personnel staged further up the road near the intersection of Interlachen Lane.

By approximately 10 p.m., police announced that the scene had been secured. The man involved was found deceased inside the residence. Authorities confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public, though the scene remains active as the investigation continues.

“Thank you to the community and public safety partners for their assistance,” Burnsville Police said in a statement released late Thursday night.

In addition to Burnsville officers, mutual aid was provided by the Minnesota State Patrol, Eagan Police Department, Bloomington Police Department, Rosemount Police Department, and the Savage Police Department. Both Burnsville SWAT and South Metro SWAT responded to the scene, alongside personnel from the Burnsville Fire Department.

Further details, including the individual's identity, have not yet been released as authorities notify next of kin and continue their investigation.
