Burnsville Fire Department Launches State’s First On-Scene Whole Blood Transfusion Program

BURNSVILLE, MINNESOTA – The Burnsville Fire Department has announced it will become Minnesota's first emergency medical service (EMS) to equip its 911 ambulances with whole-blood products for on-scene transfusions. This groundbreaking initiative, rolling out this month, aims to improve patient outcomes by addressing significant blood loss directly at the scene of emergencies.

Fire Chief BJ Jungmann highlighted the transformative potential of the program, stating, “Our crews see the need for pre-hospital transfusions on a regular basis, and we know this will lead to better outcomes for patients in the field. Burnsville is proud to lead the way in lifesaving EMS services.”

In many trauma situations, EMS teams traditionally use saline solutions to stabilize patients by maintaining blood pressure. While effective in keeping patients stable, saline does not replicate the healing benefits of blood. Whole blood transfusions provide oxygen-carrying red blood cells, clotting agents, and platelets essential for initiating the healing process.

Burnsville EMS crews have undergone extensive training to handle, store, and administer whole-blood transfusions safely in pre-hospital settings. “Our community expects the best from our crews, and they are delivering it,” Jungmann said. “I couldn’t be prouder of how they have embraced this advanced level of care.”

Call for Blood Donations

January marks a critical period for blood donations in Minnesota, as winter months typically see a decline in contributions. To support the new program and ensure a steady blood supply, the Burnsville Fire Department plans to host an upcoming blood drive.

“Everyone in the community could benefit from whole blood transfusions,” Jungmann emphasized. “We encourage residents to donate blood, whether at our event or other donation drives. Giving blood saves lives.”

Residents are urged to stay tuned for details about the department's blood drive and to consider donating to bolster the local blood supply. By supporting this initiative, the Burnsville community can play a vital role in advancing emergency medical care and saving lives.
