Hostage Situation in Burnsville Resolved Safely After Hours-Long Standoff
BURNSVILLE, MINNESOTA – A standoff in Burnsville ended safely after law enforcement responded to a mental health crisis that escalated into a hostage situation involving two children. Authorities were called to the 1800 block of Country View Drive at approximately 4:45 PM on Sunday, February 23, 2025.
According to officials with the Burnsville Police Department, the situation quickly escalated, prompting officers to secure the area and close portions of County Road 11 and Country View Drive. A shelter-in-place order was issued for a two-mile radius around the scene at approximately 6:30 PM as a precautionary measure.
After several hours of negotiation, the two children were released unharmed. Law enforcement successfully apprehended the suspect, who was taken into custody around 8:15 PM and is undergoing medical evaluation. The suspect's identity has not yet been released, and authorities have not disclosed further details regarding potential charges.
Multiple agencies assisted the Burnsville Police Department in handling the situation, including Bloomington Police, South St. Paul Police, and Rosemount Police, with their BearCat tactical vehicle deployment. Additionally, Burnsville Fire and emergency medical personnel were on standby to assist as needed.
