Burnsville Man Charged with Assault and Threats of Violence After Armed Standoff
BURNSVILLE, MINNESOTA – A Burnsville man has been charged with multiple felonies after an armed confrontation with his roommate on Saturday, October 19, 2024, which escalated into a standoff with law enforcement. Tyler Michael Nguyen, 24, faces charges of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and making threats of violence with intent to terrorize.
According to the criminal complaint from the Dakota County Attorney’s Office, Burnsville Police, with mutual aid assistance from neighboring agencies, responded to a residence in The Gallery Apartment complex on Burnsville Parkway after receiving a report that Nguyen allegedly had pointed a gun at his male roommate following a dispute over rent money. The victim, whose name was not released, told officers that an argument broke out between the two men, during which Nguyen allegedly shoved him. Two female witnesses intervened, and the situation briefly de-escalated.
However, Nguyen allegedly returned to the victim's room a short time later, this time reportedly armed with a Springfield Armory Hellcat 9mm pistol. The victim, who was seated in a chair at the time, reported that Nguyen allegedly cocked the gun and placed it inches from his face, threatening to kill him. Nguyen allegedly said, “Bro I will f****** kill you” and “I will shoot you right now.” At one point, it was alleged that Nguyen swung the firearm at the victim as if he intended to strike him with it.
The victim described the gun as a black handgun with a green sight and said he feared for his life.
Once law enforcement arrived at the scene, Nguyen reportedly refused to cooperate with their commands, leading to a standoff. SWAT and Emergency Action Group teams were called to the residence, and after a tense six-hour standoff, Nguyen surrendered to authorities. A loaded handgun matching the description provided by the victim was found allegedly found in Nguyen’s closet.
Nguyen has been charged with two felonies: second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, which carries a potential sentence of 3 to 7 years in prison and/or a fine ranging from $4,200 to $14,000, and threats of violence with intent to terrorize, punishable by up to 5 years in prison and/or a fine of $3,000 to $10,000.
As of writing this article, court records show that his bond/bail was set at $30,000 with conditions or $2,000 cash bail with conditions. According to the court records, Nguyen has paid that cash bail. His next court date is November 11, 2024, at 9 AM in Hastings, Minnesota.
