Man Charged with Second-Degree Murder in Lakeville Amazon Fulfillment Center Shooting
LAKEVILLE, MINNESOTA - The shooter in the June 29, 2024, early morning fatal shooting at the Lakeville Amazon Fulfillment Center has been identified as Mohamed A. Hared, 24, from Faribault, Minnesota. He has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of his co-worker, Ahmed Ibrahim Cariif, 22. Below, you will find the information provided by the Dakota County Attorney’s Office, which filed a criminal complaint detailing the events that led to this tragic outcome for Hared’s first appearance in court at 1 PM today.
The complaint states that shortly after 4 AM, Lakeville police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting in the parking lot of the Amazon Fulfillment Center located at 9800 217th St. W. Among the callers was Hared himself, who reported that he had accidentally shot Cariif. Upon arrival, officers found Cariif lying face down between two parked cars, with Hared standing nearby, holding a handgun. A third individual, referred to as Witness 1, awaited the police inside the building.
Initial Statements
According to Hared’s statement to the police, he, Cariif, and Witness 1 had carpooled to work since Hared’s car had broken down. Hared, who holds a permit to carry a firearm, left his gun in Witness 1’s car but later noticed the flashlight attachment was missing. The complaint states that Hared confronted both Cariif and Witness 1, but they denied any knowledge of the missing attachment. This confrontation led to escalating tensions, culminating in a fatal altercation during a subsequent break at around 4 AM.
According to the criminal complaint, Hared claimed that Cariif became aggressive, advancing towards him and attempting to punch him. Fearing for his safety, Hared said he tried to run but was cornered by the open driver’s side door of Witness 1’s vehicle. Hared stated that he warned Cariif to stop as he reached for his gun that was on his waistband but ultimately fired his gun when Cariif continued to advance and allegedly tried to strangle him. A second shot was fired by Hared when Cariif attempted to force the gun out of his hand. Following the shots being fired, it was reported Hared called 911 for help.
Witness 1’s Account
Witness 1’s account, however, painted a different picture. The criminal complaint states that Witness 1 confirmed an argument over the missing flashlight attachment and stated that Hared accused him and Cariif of stealing it. Witness 1 described a physical fight between Hared and Cariif, which he reportedly initially broke up. Despite his efforts to mediate, the confrontation resumed, leading to Hared drawing his gun and firing two shots, the second of which proved fatal after both Witness 1 and Cariif said not to shoot.
Surveillance Footage and Forensic Evidence
According to the criminal complaint, surveillance footage from the Amazon Fulfillment Center, which was reviewed by detectives, corroborated parts of both accounts but highlighted discrepancies. The criminal complaint states that the video showed Hared and Cariif engaging in two physical altercations. During the first fight, it was alleged that Hared initiated it by throwing the first punch, and Witness 1 intervened. Despite having opportunities to retreat, it was alleged that Hared continued the confrontation. The second fight ended with Hared shooting Cariif, who collapsed in the walkway between the vehicles, according to the complaint.
The complaint states that crime scene investigators recovered two 9mm casings and noted a bullet hole in the exterior driver’s door of Witness 1’s vehicle. An autopsy revealed that Cariif had suffered blunt force trauma to the face and hands, consistent with a fistfight and a gunshot wound that struck his heart, lung, and aorta.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Based on the evidence, the Dakota County Attorney's Office charged Hared with second-degree murder (with intent, but not premeditated), which carries a maximum sentence of 40 years. The complaint asserts that Hared caused Cariif’s death with intent but without premeditation, using a firearm during the offense. Court records show that the Dakota County Attorney’s Office requests bail be set at $2,000,000 without conditions or $1,000,000 with specific conditions.
