Minnesota State Patrol Investigating Fatal Wrong-Way Crash on I-35W in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – The Minnesota State Patrol is actively investigating a fatal crash that occurred early this morning, Saturday, January 25, 2025, on northbound I-35W near Johnson Street in Minneapolis. The incident occurred around 5:50 AM and resulted in one fatality.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a Chevy Malibu was traveling southbound in the left lane of the northbound lanes of I-35W. Meanwhile, a Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling northbound on the same highway. The Jeep Grand Cherokee attempted to move from the left lane to the center lane. Simultaneously, the Chevy Malibu moved from the left lane to the center lane, resulting in a head-on collision. Both vehicles came to a stop in the right lane. According to the State Patrol, alcohol was believed to be a contributing factor in this crash for the driver of the Chevy Malibu.
The Chevrolet Malibu was driven by a 21-year-old male from Crystal, MN, who was reported to have died as a result of their injuries. The Jeep Grand Cherokee was driven by a 25-year-old male from Lino Lakes, MN, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The Minneapolis Fire Department, Minnesota State Patrol, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) all assisted with this incident.
As a result of the crash, authorities closed all lanes of northbound I-35W at Johnson Street. Traffic is being rerouted off the highway at New Brighton Boulevard. The road was closed for about 3-4 hours while emergency personnel investigated the cause of the crash and cleaned up the scene.
