Major I-35W Reconstruction Project Begins in Burnsville
BURNSVILLE, MINNESOTA – The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), in collaboration with the City of Burnsville and Dakota County, will begin a significant reconstruction project on April 14th along I-35W through Burnsville. The project encompasses the stretch between Cliff Road and the I-35/35W/35E split in Burnsville, which will continue through Fall 2026.
Project Overview
This $80 million initiative aims to enhance the infrastructure and safety of a critical segment of I-35W. Key components of the project include:
Resurfacing both asphalt and concrete pavement on I-35W.
Repairing or replacing bridges at Cliff Road, Highway 13, and Burnsville Parkway.
Updating guardrails and improving drainage systems.
Preserving historic features and extending the pavement's lifespan.
Traffic Impacts and Detours
Motorists should anticipate various road, lane, and ramp closures throughout the construction period. Notable closures include:
Buck Hill Road: Closed in both directions between County Road 42 and just north of Southcross Drive from April 14 through May 1.
I-35W: Closed in both directions between the I-35/35E/35W split in Burnsville and I-494 in Bloomington from April 25 through April 28.
Cliff Road under I-35W: Closed from mid-April through October 2026.
Burnsville Parkway Bridge: Closed between the east and west frontage roads from April 16 through October 1.
Highway 13: Reduced to one lane in both directions with head-to-head traffic over I-35W from April 16 through October 17.
Various Ramp Closures: Including ramps from westbound Highway 13 to southbound I-35W, northbound I-35W to westbound Highway 13, and Burnsville Parkway to northbound I-35W, among others.
Detour routes are established for each closure to facilitate traffic flow. Motorists are advised to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
