Light Snowfall Causes Hundreds of Crashes Across Minnesota
TWIN CITIES, MINNESOTA - A light snowfall on Wednesday caused slippery road conditions across Minnesota, leading to over 577 crashes statewide, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The National Weather Service reported snowfall accumulations ranging from 0.5 to 1.6 inches across the Metro, but even this modest amount of snow proved hazardous for drivers.
Of the crashes reported between midnight and 9 p.m. on Wednesday, 420 involved property damage, 48 resulted in injuries, and two were fatal. The State Patrol also reported 66 vehicle spinouts and 23 jackknifed semis as roadways turned icy and unpredictable.
Although accumulations were light, the snow’s impact underscores the importance of preparation and caution during winter driving.
Stay Safe in Winter Conditions
Officials are reminding drivers of key safety tips to navigate slick roads:
Slow Down: Icy conditions can dramatically increase stopping distances.
Increase Following Distance: Leave plenty of room between vehicles.
Turn Your Headlights On: It helps your visibility and helps others see you.
Stay Prepared: Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready, and keep an emergency kit on hand.
As winter settles in, even light snowfalls like Wednesday’s can lead to dangerous conditions if drivers are caught off guard. Authorities urge everyone to adjust their driving habits and stay alert to keep Minnesota’s roadways safe.
