BURNSVILLE, MINNESOTA - A 23-year-old Prior Lake man has been charged with felony obstruction of legal process after an altercation with officers in Burnsville on November 26, 2024, that left one office with injuries, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Dakota County Attorney's Office.

The Prior Lake man was at a Burnsville medical center undergoing treatment when care staff initiated an emergency transport hold due to mental health concerns. According to the complaint, the man left the facility before the process was completed, prompting police to respond to an unknown disturbance. Upon locating the man, they attempted to detain him, but he reportedly resisted and engaged in physical aggression, including throwing “haymaker” punches at one officer. After a struggle, the man then fled toward a Chick-fil-A, where police deployed a taser, though it was ineffective. Additional officers arrived to subdue the man and take him into custody.

The complaint states that during the initial altercation, an officer sustained injuries, including a near-complete tear of the quadriceps tendon in their right knee, rendering them unable to stand. The officer also experienced bruising to their left hand.

The man is being charged with felony obstruction of legal process causing substantial bodily harm, which carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and a fine of $10,000.

Original Story - BURNSVILLE, MINNESOTA - According to Burnsville officials, Burnsville Officers responded to the area of the Chick-fil-A on County Road 42 on Tuesday morning, November 27, 2024, shortly after 10 a.m., for an incident involving a patient having a mental health crisis.

While this incident is still under investigation, initial reports say that an individual had left a nearby hospital before entering the Chick-fil-A. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, but the individual became uncooperative, leading to the use of a taser to bring them into custody safely. From witnesses, it appears that the first taser deployment was unsuccessful, and officers struggled to gain control of the subject. During this struggle, one officer did sustain minor injuries but is reported to be okay at this time.
It appears additional officers were finally able to get the subject into custody. It is unknown at this time if the subject was injured or their condition, per officials. We do know that Burnsville Fire and Medics were also called to the scene to provide aid following the incident.
