Serious Crash in Apple Valley Leaves Two With Serious Injuries

APPLE VALLEY, MINNESOTA—A serious two-vehicle crash in Apple Valley late on Tuesday morning, January 28, 2025, resulted in significant road closures and left two people with serious injuries and one with minor injuries. The crash occurred around 11:20 AM at the intersection of Cedar Avenue and 140th Street West.

According to the Apple Valley Police Department, the crash involved a 2020 Subaru Forester (Unit 1) and a 2013 Honda Pilot (Unit 2). Unit 2 was traveling southbound on Cedar Avenue in the right lane when it entered the intersection on what witnesses described as the light just turning from green to a yellow light, with more than enough time to get through the intersection before it turned red. According to multiple witnesses, Unit 1 was traveling westbound on 140th Street and proceeded into the intersection against a red light. Witnesses state they do not believe Unit 2 was speeding. One witness, traveling southbound on Cedar Avenue and next to Unit 2, stated they had to brake hard to avoid being hit by Unit 1.

According to the police report, the driver of Unit 2 sustained knee pain and facial injuries from the airbag deployment and was transported to M Health Fairview Ridges Hospital and was reported to have minor injuries. The driver of Unit 1 was found unconscious and unresponsive at the scene, with officials suspecting a possible medical event, such as a cardiac issue, before the crash. A passenger in Unit 1 also suffered significant injuries. Both occupants of Unit 1 were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center in critical condition.

Authorities confirmed that Unit 1 was not speeding during the crash, and there were no signs of distracted driving. The preliminary cause of the crash was determined to be failure to yield at a red light.

Minnesota State Patrol, Apple Valley Police, Apple Valley Fire, M Health Medics, Allina Health, and ALF Ambulance all responded to the scene. Due to the crash, eastbound 140th Street at Pennock Avenue was closed, and southbound Cedar Avenue was reduced to one lane for an extended period while officials conducted their investigation. Both vehicles were towed with investigative holds.
