TWIN CITIES, MINNESOTA: The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities has issued an EXTREME COLD WARNING in effect until Noon Tuesday.

Central, east-central, south-central, southwest, and west-central Minnesota residents are under an extreme cold warning until noon CST on Tuesday. The region is experiencing dangerously low wind chills that could plunge as low as 37 degrees below zero. Such conditions pose severe risks, including frostbite on exposed skin within just 10 minutes.

Precautionary Measures

Authorities strongly urge residents to stay indoors until conditions improve. If venturing outside is unavoidable, take the following precautions:

  • Dress in multiple layers rather than relying on a single heavy coat.

  • Cover all exposed skin, including wearing gloves, a scarf, and a hat to retain body heat.

  • Bring pets indoors to keep them safe from the harsh conditions.

  • Check on older family members, friends, and neighbors frequently to ensure their well-being.

  • Use portable heaters safely and avoid operating generators or grills indoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Current Weather Overview

This Arctic outbreak has reached its coldest phase, as the core of the cold area works across the Upper Midwest. Daytime highs have already dipped significantly, with central Minnesota experiencing temperatures in the negative teens and other areas ranging from -5°F to -10°F. These temperatures are expected to fall further tonight, with widespread lows below -20°F in central Minnesota and -15°F to -20°F elsewhere. Winds, although decreasing, will still be strong enough to create wind chills between -30°F and -40°F.

Upcoming Temperature Trends

Relief is on the horizon, as temperatures are expected to rebound late Tuesday morning. Southwesterly winds will bring slightly warmer air, pushing daytime highs into the single digits by mid-afternoon. While wind chills will remain below zero, the conditions will improve compared to previous days.

Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to return to seasonable levels by Wednesday, except for a brief cooldown following a clipper system on Thursday
