The State of Minnesota Will Be Hosting a Free Kid Ice Fishing Weekend and Free Park Day, Jan. 18-20
MINNESOTA - The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced that Minnesotans can enjoy a weekend of free outdoor activities as the state hosts Take a Kid Ice Fishing Weekend on January 18-20th and Free Park Day on Monday, Jan. 20. The events offer unique opportunities for families to connect with nature and engage in winter activities.
Take a Kid Ice Fishing Weekend
From Jan. 18 to Jan. 20, Minnesota residents can fish without a license if accompanied by a child aged 15 or younger who regularly does not require a fishing license.
“Ice fishing is lots of fun and this weekend is a great time to share the experience with a kid in your life,” said Benji Kohn, volunteer mentor program coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
For anyone new to ice fishing, the MnDNR provides tips on ice safety guidelines and tips for catching various types of fish on their website, Take a Kid Ice Fishing. You can also watch the webinar below for additional tips, including recommended equipment on a budget from members of the MnDNR.
Additionally, the fishing season for stream trout in lakes outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness kicks off on Jan. 18. Anglers can visit the DNR’s trout fishing webpage, Trout fishing in Minnesota, for information on trout fishing lakes and tips to enhance their experience.
Ice Safety Guidelines
The Minnesota DNR urges everyone to prioritize safety while enjoying activities on the ice. Ice thickness can vary greatly, and caution is essential:
Always wear a foam life jacket or float coat on the ice, except when in a vehicle.
Carry essential safety tools such as ice picks, rope, an ice chisel, and a tape measure.
Regularly check ice thickness, especially in areas where conditions may change quickly.
Bring a cell phone or personal locator beacon and inform someone of your plans and expected return time.
Parents and guardians should supervise children near ice and discuss safety precautions.
“No ice can ever be considered completely safe, but following safety guidelines can minimize risks,” the DNR emphasizes. Comprehensive ice safety information is available at mndnr.gov/icesafety.
Free Park Day – Monday, January 20, 2025
On Monday, January 20, 2025, vehicle permit fees will be waived at all 73 Minnesota State Parks and Recreation areas as part of Free Park Day. Visitors can take part in a variety of winter activities, including birding, hiking, nature photography, and enjoying campfires with hot chocolate and s’mores.
Minnesota State Parks offer free admission on four days each year, encouraging families and friends to spend time together in nature. The fee-free dates for 2025 are:
Monday, January 20, 2025
Saturday, April 26, 2025
Saturday, June 14, 2025
Friday, November 28, 2025
State parks are open year-round, and there’s a state park within 30 miles of most Minnesotans. With a free day in each season, it’s a great opportunity to explore a new destination or revisit a favorite park at a different time of year. Please note that the entrance fee waiver does not cover amenity or user fees for activities like camping, rentals, or special tours.
Research highlights the many health and wellness benefits of spending time in nature. According to ParkRx, contact with nature improves physical, mental, and spiritual health, boosts mood and immunity, and makes exercise more enjoyable. The American Psychological Association notes that exposure to nature is linked to improved attention, reduced stress, and increased empathy and cooperation.
Details on participating parks and available activities can be found at mndnr.gov/freeparkdays.
